HOW DID YOU FALL INTO FOSTERING:
I moved to Atlanta from Rutledge, GA. My husband was military, so for many years, we didn’t have pets. I love, love, love animals and I always have! In Rutledge, I had 13 cats and some goats! I found homes for them. When I got here I brought my two dogs and cat to PAWS Atlanta’s low-cost vaccine clinic. I saw a piece of paper that said, “Do you want to be a foster mom?” And I said, “Yes!”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN FOSTERING, AND HOW MANY ANIMALS HAVE YOU HAD:
I’ve only been fostering 3-4 months, and this is my 10th or 11th foster. All have been adopted, except for one, “Sister.” Two days ago I got a baby kitten, 12-14 days old. She’s awesome!

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE FOSTER:
My favorite story is “Sister.” She was my first foster. Her name was “Mama” originally, because she was found with a litter of kittens. When they got to the shelter, the staff found “Mama” had never given birth. They weren’t her babies! “Sister” somehow kept those kittens alive. That is the miracle. I took care of “Sister and her babies until they were moved to the adoption floor. The kittens were quickly adopted, but “Sister missed her babies, so she regressed and would hide. Harriett and I decided she would stay with me, and now I don’t think I can give her up.

She’s doing so well. Friends come over, she lets them pet her. She is wonderful.

WHAT DO YOU GET OUT OF FOSTERING:
The animals themselves are such a joy. I’m not sure I could quit this now.

I get to have pets, I get to love on them, and I get to socialize them, and I get them ready for permanent homes. Then, Harriet asks me, “Barbara, are you ready for another?” And then she picks the one who needs me most. I can hardly wait to see what she’s going to bring me next!”

ARE THE GOOD-BYE’S HARD?
You do get attached. They’re almost like children. But you get them ready and PAWS Atlanta makes sure they are going to someone who will love them. And, you think, “I’ve done a good thing.”
